Disney's musical production of The Lion King has been seen by over 80 million people around the world.

I know people who have travelled interstate to see the production but now The Lion King is coming to our doorstep in Perth from 18th November 2015 to 28th February 2016.

The original Lion King movie has been a favourite of so many children and adults over the years with the powerful and heartwarming story that portrays the circle of life.

Converting the movie to a full-size production for the stage was no easy feat. Capturing the bold and majestic quality of the animals and landscape of the African savanna, the stage production has 25 incredible life size African animals including a huge rhinoceros and giraffes.

The Lion King has won 70 major theatre awards internationally including six Tony Awards® for Best Musical, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Choreography and Best Direction of a Musical. It has been breaking box office records and winning the hearts of audiences everywhere.

The theatre resonates with the powerful and iconic songs of The Lion King including "Circle of Life" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight". The much loved music for this musical was written by Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice. These songs earned Elton John a Grammy® Award for Best Musical Show Album.

Director and Costume designer Julie Taymor brings the characters to life by creating the animals with human characteristics. She won an award for Best Costume design in recognition of the sensational costumes, puppets and masks she created for the musical.

I love to delve behind the scenes, to understand the creation of a production as amazing as the Lion King. Here are clips showing the design and creation of the costumes, masks and puppets for these awesome African animals.

Design and creation of the Masks and Puppets
A different technique was used for each animal, incorporating puppets or masks, to create the theatrical magic that brings the Lion King's characters to life.

The Lion King will be performing from 18th November 2015 to 28th February 2016. Don't miss the opportunity to see this amazing production at Crown Theatre, Perth.
