Upon suggestion from a friend, I walked through the beautiful Eden Gardens and was surprised to come upon a little cafe at the back. My friend failed to mention there was a cafe there at all, so I have to thank her for my lovely surprise.

I didn't eat there as I had already eaten, nonetheless I was intrigued by its little cottage charm. It turns out the cafe which opened 5 years ago is actually in an original 1871 farmhouse that was on the site, and historically, it's one of the first buildings in Mt.Eliza.

The current owner is actually a chef and his partner waitresses from time to time when they're not away as they were on the day I was there.

Breakfast meals on average are from $16 to $18 and range from gluten free buttermilk pancakes, breakfast tart, and eggs in a variety of ways and the usual variety of toasts and breads.

The meals they serve all day on average are $17 and include meals like zucchini frittata, smoked salmon, poached chicken, roast beef bagel, tomato and eggplant bruschetta and so on, though I do admit to simplifying my description. They each come with all the trimmings like drizzled chive sour cream, toasted pine nut salad, sweet corn and parsley salsa to name a few. There is also soup of the day with a savoury scone and fresh or toasted bread with fillings on offer also.

On top of the meals they serve all day, there's a lunch selection as well. You can have pie of the day with a garden salad, smoked cod with the trimmings, grilled Kransky sausage, egg pasta, chicken and leak tart, seared calamari and their own Caesar salad all with trimmings of course.

If your child is under 12, there is a kids' menu and the meals are $8 each. You can get pasta napoli, ham and cheese and pineapple muffin, small soup with a cheesy toast and a kids' sandwich fresh or toasted with 2 fillings

There is not a huge selection of sweets. You can get a sour cherry and chocolate ganache crumble with ice cream, 2 warm scones with jam and whipped cream or 2 savoury scones with tomato relish and butter. There is also a selection of home made cakes, cookies and tarts on display.

The cafe seats around 40 people inside and another 40 outside, overlooking the gardens.
