Lingerie Football was an idea started, stereotypically, in America in 2009. The concept for this seven-on-seven, scantily clad type of football originated from the Super Bowl half-time alternative television special called the Lingerie Bowl, a pay-per-view event broadcast annually opposite the Super Bowl half-time show. The television show has become a staple of Super Bowl Sunday festivities for millions worldwide and is broadcast in over 85 countries.
Now, Lingerie Football is making its down under debut this June in both Brisbane and Sydney.
Described as the fasted growing sports league, Australia's very own Chloe Butler, who plays for the LA Temptation, and Adrian Purnell of the Lingerie Bowl-winning Tampa Breeze, are in town to spruik a couple of all star games that will be taking place. Teams from Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney will all be playing in a local league, making it's frilly presence felt across Australia.
Despite apparent marketing strategy behind the original concept, Lingerie Football is all about "bringing back the biff" and empowering women in the sporting world.
If you're worried about the lovely ladies hurting themselves, well let's put your mind at ease. Along with the bras, panties and garters they will be well-protected with elbow pads, shoulder pads, knee pads and ice hockey-style helmets with clear visors (in lieu of face masks).
There are no field goals and no punts. There is a kickoff to start the game and second half.[2] A team must attempt to get a first down on every fourth down. After a touchdown, a team can attempt a one-point conversion from the two yard line, or a two-point conversion from the five-yard line.
The 2012 LFL All-Star Game will feature 32 of the most athletic and beautiful women across the league as the Western and Eastern Conference teams clash in front of projected capacity crowds in Sydney and Brisbane, two cities that the LFL has identified as being potential homes for two of the franchises in 2013. Expect these games to be as explosive, combative and competitive as all the LFL games are as each player strives to impress for selection into the teams in 2013.
Said to be the "ultimate live sports experience" LFL Football has developed a cult-like following in Australia, and with large success being celebrate in the US, the game is now broadcast in 43 countries with rumours of new leagues being set up in Europe, Canada and right here on Australian soil.
So get out there and support the women who are baring all (well, almost) in the name of great sporting entertainment!
The All Star tour dates are set as the 2nd of June for Brisbane and the 9th of June for Sydney. Tickets can be purchased through Ticketek.com
