The Magical Spiegeltent is European in origin. This reflects in its structure and style. It's history goes back hundreds of years; it has the style and elegance of years gone by and is adorned with large mirrors chandeliers and intimate theatre style seating. The audience is seated in a semi circle close together, which creates the perfect ambience for shows like Limbo and Lady Rizo.
I have taken a close interest in The Sydney Festival in the past five years. The performances shown there are my favourite events.
This year a friend and myself chose a couple of performances that stand out from the rest.
Last Saturday we attended the Five Fifteen Session of Limbo and were not disappointed. Limbo is similar to Cirque De Solei on a smaller scale. The five main performers did acrobatic and dance routines that were amazing, to the music of jazz, rap, and bossa nova. Their lean sculptured bodies look so fit and their flexibility and rhythm leaves you amazed as they perform aerial acrobatics.
There was a very wonderful dance routine by one of the female performers. It was pretty to watch performed, with the grace and elegance resembling a ballet dancer, using a hoop hanging from above for her elegant mixture of aerial acrobatic and dance moves.
Lady Rizo is a award winning cabaret star who resides in the United States. Lady Rizo performs with a mixture of sophistication and cheekiness which is attractive to her audience. This is her first performance in Sydney.
She sings songs from the South Pacific and does her own version of Judy Garland classics along with many more well known celebrity classics. Lady Rizo has done seasons in London and Edinburgh.
Her performance in the Spiegeltent will delight her audience as she tantalizes and teases of what will come next from her vocals and playful performance.
The Spiegeltent is situated in Hyde Park right in the middle of the Festival Garden. Entrance is free and there are bars, cafes and other attractions. The atmosphere is alive and buzzy so it's a nice place to spend an hour before a show and relax with drink.
The entrance to the Festival Garden is close to the fountain as you enter Hyde Park from Elizabeth St just near St James Station. When you get to the fountain look ahead and to your right and you will see a blaze of lights and the entrance to the Festival Garden.
The Festival Garden is open from the 9 - 26 of January. Take a look - it's a lot of fun.
Limbo is showing from 9-26 of January, while Lady Rizo performs 21-26 of January.
