Bellbird Park in Lilydale is normally a grassy open park dominated by a large pergola upon a small rise in the landscape. On the first Sunday of each month it comes alive with the sound of music, the vista of almost fifty tents but no campers and the hustle and bustle of shoppers, browsers and even doggies.

It's the Lilydale Rotary Club's monthly Craft and Produce Market, held on the first Sunday of the month.

The majority of the open tent housed stalls are crafts and locally made produce.

The crafts are hand crafted jewellery, leather goods, clothing. And much more.

For the inner man, woman and child there is a very large range of locally made produce. Own grown fresh vegetables, eggs, berries, cheeses, jams, preserves and many more.

Man's best friend is not forgotten. There is a stall selling home-made nutritious doggie biscuits. Judging by the number of doggies who bought their owners for a morning out, that stall will be popular.

Those who want to eat on the spot are catered for with a coffee van, pancakes, Devilish Donuts, (and they are) Jakes Kitchen.

Local singer Jenny Luke is a regular at the Lilydale Rotary Market who was busking with her acoustic mandolin. Even though her singing and mandolin were amplified, the volume was pleasant and only those that wanted to hear her were entertained.

At the other end of the main row of stalls was Rick Strumming, strumming his acoustic guitar and singing some very pleasant country style songs. Rick admitted that Strumming was not his real name, but was more pronounceable than his real one.

Like Jenny at the other end of the stalls, he likes performing.

Off road parking is free and entry to the market area is by a gold coin donation and dogs are allowed, if accompanied by their owners.

Bellbird Park is on Swansea Road about 400 metres past the entrance to Lilydale Lake.

All the photos illustrating this article were taken at the June market.

This market has been operating for many years and all the crafts and produce are of very high quality.

Even if you don't buy anything, it is a worthwhile venue to visit and browse.
