Where yesterday is remembered today

The old Lilydale Court house.

The old Lilydale Courthouse is the headquarters of the Lilydale and District Historical Society. The Society curates two photographic exhibitions each year, featuring some aspect of the district's history.

The current display is titled "Lilydale's Public Places Public Lives, 1860s to 1970s." The display features ten large panels with over 80 photographs of historic Lilydale. Accompanying the photos are details on many of the early businesses and activities of Lilydale.

Some of the topics covered are, Commerce & Trade, Main Street, Lilydale Railway Station, Lilydale Lake and the Olinda Creek.

The exhibition would be of interest to visitors and local residents alike. Many local residents have very little knowledge of the place they call home and are often surprised at the rich history of the area.

Dame Nellie Melba called Lilydale home and the society has a comprehensive archive relating to this grand Dame. A portrait of her forms part of the display.

Their archives holds very large amount of local history including the Lilydale Cemetery Burial Register and photos of the cemetery headstones 1864 1931.

Book
A 60 page book on the display can be purchased for $25-00.

You can join the Society for only $20-00 per year, which entitles you to search their archives, attend their monthly meetings receive their quarterly newsletter.

Donation box.
Admission is free, but a court house donation box is available for satisfied visitors.
