I can't help getting excited about food vans. I think it's the fairground thing. It's food where it isn't meant to be, like finding a small guinea pig nestled in your favourite armchair.

I was pretty damn excited to find the Lil' Nom Noms food van parked outside my house. Pretty. Damn. Excited.

Lil' Nom Noms offers Vietnamese street food across Melbourne. It's run by a couple who ran restaurants and experienced the corporate world before deciding that working life out of a truck was a lot better. Their range on offer depends on the place and the day, but features banh mi (baguettes with salad and meat), rice paper rolls, skewers, Vietnamese tacos, salads, and a host of other dishes.

I gave in and ordered the deal that was on offer that night – steamed bao, spring rolls, and a salad for $12. The sight of the steamed bao had my mouth watering (actually, just reading about it on the menu did – a steamed Vietnamese bun with pulled pork? I'm there). I handed over my cash and tripped lightly back into my house.

Obviously I loved the concept. On eating, it was... okay. The pork was wonderfully tender, if slightly greasy, and the bun was decent. The sides were disappointing, the salad suffering, and the spring rolls less-than-moreish.

The verdict? Nom Noms is decent. Its price range isn't crazy for a Melbourne food van. With much more interesting fare than hundreds of other vans, the owners deserve some acclaim. Just don't expect something that will change your life (even if it does magically appear outside your door).
