Lightscape, the highly anticipated winter event of Melbourne that was sold out in 2022, is set to return to the Royal Botanic Gardens with a complete new look and concept for 2023. Get ready to be enchanted by a breathtaking eight-metre sphere showcasing more than 20,000 dynamic LEDs, along with singing trees, a mesmerizing fire garden and a range of colourful installations, soundscapes and monumental illuminated sculptures. This year's event is enhanced with a brand-new two-kilometre trail that loops around the lake, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature at night.

Nestled in the heart of Melbourne lies Melbourne Gardens, a lush haven that dates back to 1846, when it was established on the land of the Kulin Nation. With over 31 collections of plants spread across its 38-hectare site, Melbourne Gardens stands out as one of the world's most magnificent botanic gardens, showcasing living artworks that exude timeless beauty.

For 175 years, Melbourne Gardens has provided the city's inhabitants with a place of respite, an escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life, and an ideal spot for cultural events and cherished personal experiences. Beyond its recreational value, Melbourne Gardens is also home to the National Herbarium of Victoria, where the State Botanical Collection, a vital resource for scientific research in botany, taxonomy, mycology, and conservation, is housed.

The Gardens feature not only 8,000 diverse plant species, but also the historic Melbourne Observatory. The Gardens' programs, which intertwine science, horticulture, and public engagement, contribute to the well-being of the local community and the preservation of the natural environment.

Be sure to bundle up and indulge in mouth-watering bites from a variety of food trucks and bars available at the Lightscape Welcome Zone or on the trail. If you're not up for the food trucks, there are a variety of options for dining nearby if you get there before your visit to the gardens. Here are some recommendations (some close at 4:30 or 5pm so do confirm before planning):
1. The Terrace Restaurant: This restaurant is located within the gardens and offers contemporary Australian cuisine with stunning views of the gardens.
2. The Kiosk at the Garden: This outdoor cafe is situated next to the Ornamental Lake and serves light snacks, sandwiches, and coffee.
3. Jardin Tan: A French-Vietnamese restaurant located within the gardens, offering a fusion of Southeast Asian and French cuisine.
4. EntrecĂ´te South Yarra: A short walk from the gardens, this classic French bistro serves steak and frites, salads, and a range of desserts.
5. Fawkner: A casual cafe located on Domain Road, just outside the gardens, offering a range of sandwiches, salads, and baked goods.
These are just a few options, but there are plenty of other dining choices nearby to suit a range of preferences and budgets.

Tickets for this event are available now, so don't miss your chance to experience Melbourne's most captivating winter event.
