Where is the best place to find lighthouses? Well, although no longer widely used, a number of these beacon light structures still guide ships at sea today.

There are at least four locations where I am able to find both operational as well as non-operational lighthouses.

Marino Rocks lighthouse

The first is within Marino Conservation Park approximately 20 kilometres southwest of Adelaide. The car park entrance is at the end of Nimboya Road. An easy walk from there took me to the Marino Rocks lighthouse. Established in 1962, this 12-metre-high unmanned white square concrete tower now uses a low voltage system as its source.

Secondly, I found two lighthouses along the coast of southern Yorke Peninsula providing a safer passage for vessels into Spencer Gulf. Cape Spencer lighthouse, at 80 metres above sea level, has a light range of 23 nautical miles. The current concrete structure and lantern was erected during the 1970s. On the other hand, West Cape lighthouse was constructed of stainless steel in 1980. Its round metal tower is only nine metres in height. Both grounds also offer spectacularly magnificent views. Just be mindful that a vehicle entry fee does apply to reach these lighthouses.

And, last but not least, there is the Cape Jaffa lighthouse on Marine Parade at Kingston SE. Decommissioned in 1973, this screw pile wrought-iron tower was dismantled from Margaret Brock Reef and reconstructed on land. Visitors are welcome to tour the lighthouse during school holidays. Can you imagine living in this eight-room structure? The keeper and his family actually did!

Now, have you been able to find other lighthouses in South Australia? If so, then please let me know your findings.

There's two lighthouses on Kangaroo Island. The one at Cape Border is a little unusual as it is square.https://www.weekendnotes.com/visit-cape-borda/

Old Pt Adelaide lighthouse at the end of Commercial Rd is now part of the Maritime Museum & open to the public. It is not operational.
Althorpe Island lighthouse is still operating off the bottom of Yorke Peninsula (near Cape Spencer), but not accessible to the public.
Corny Point lighthouse on Yorke Peninsula is still operational & the reserve is open to the public.
There are also several lighthouses on Kangaroo Island which are still operational, some of which have heritage accommodation in the old keeper's cottages!
