I like to participate in life rather than be a spectator. Music, dancing, theatre, travelling, food, cycling and walking are some of my passions. Writing is an enjoyable pastime that allows me to share my experiences.

Tropical vibes (image JW)
As of mid-December 2021, the northern end of Darby Street has a new place to dine.
Light Years - Asian Bar & Diner. The 110 seat venue is the fourth one to open since 2017, when
Light Years - Byron Bay opened its doors. The high ceilinged Art Deco building that previously housed Mavericks has been given a tropical pink makeover.

Dumplings with a difference (image JW)
Each of the venues is unique and offer slightly different items on their menus. The
Burleigh Heads menu is similar to that of Newcastle, which is not online yet. The food is colourful and well presented and full of interesting flavours and textures. The crab, prawn and scallop dumplings were as tasty as they were pretty and great value at $16 for four.

The cocktails are quite unique with touches of yuzu, dragonfruit, pineapple and kiwi fruit, made with fresh juice pressed on site. Wine, beer and non alcoholic beverages are also available.

Kingfish ceviche (image JW)
Standout dishes for us were the kingfish ceviche with its broth of coconut milk, kaffir lime and chili and the "do it yourself" wraps born char-grilled wagyu, lettuce, coriander and shiso. The staff are young, friendly and enthusiastic and there was a happy relaxed vibe in the restaurant. Children's meals are $14 and there are vegetarian and vegan friendly items available.

Light Years Asian Diner is a welcome addition to Newcastle's "eat street".
