Leederville Connect announces the return of their free, all& #8208 ;ages, annual celebration which showcases the unique lifestyle of Leederville in a giant street festival.

The 2017 Light up Leederville Carnival powered by Synergy and the major sponsor being the City of Vincent, will once again be staged in the Leederville Town Centre.

This cafe strip will be taken over by the carnival on Sunday 3rd December from 12 pm with an extended closing time of 9 pm. Now in its sixth year, the LULC expects to attract up to 60,000 visitors to the precinct.

The community celebration envelopes the heart of the Leederville strip offering visitors the chance to indulge in food, live art, outdoor restaurants, cafes, pop& #8208 ;up bars, market stalls, family attractions and rides, live music across various entertainment stages, art installations and roving performers.

Highlights of this year's LULC include:
  • Pop-up cinema
  • Giant photo booth
  • Mini golf
  • Roving performers
  • Volleyball
  • Fashion parades
  • Vintage markets
  • Carnival rides

  • The programme and map for the 2017 Light Up Leederville Carnival will be released at a special Long Table dinner event which is fast becoming an annual tradition in November.

This year will see a particular focus on fashion, health, sustainability and local Leederville traders.

It is a free event and is a celebration of Leederville, its history and its cosmopolitan lifestyle, and most of us living North of the River have visited this cafe strip on several occasions. It is one of the great "cafe strips" of Perth, and one which has heaps of diverse cafes and restaurants, all in a very small area.

MORE ON THE LEEDERVILLE CARNIVAL"Positivity is expressed through the entertainment and performer, the music, the art and the collective energy that is experienced when so many people congregate in a long-sacred place, Leederville". This is some of the reasons behind the Leederville Carnival Event each year.

The first Leederville Carnival was held in 2012 by Leederville Connect, who, along with The City of Vincent created a community event that showcased all the great things that made up Leederville and it's lifestyle.

With the help of local events and entertainment company "The Funk Factory", and funded by the local community and the City of Vincent, the first Light Up Leederville Carnival was held along Oxford and Newcastle streets with over 24,000 people attending.

In 2013, the Carnival grew with almost 50,000 people attending, before growing once again to over 80,000 in 2014 and 2015.

Everything that makes this event great is worked out and done with the existing places and the community that makes up Leederville.

The Leederville Carnival is a meeting place for all Western Australians, and they will map out a Leederville 'Walk-a-bout' and give people a history of Leederville as it was pre-colonisation.

The Leederville Carnival also seeks to promote foods that contribute to a well-balanced and healthy diet. There will be over 80 local Leederville food businesses plus outside food carts brought in for the day.

Food is a huge element of the carnival and selections are chosen carefully. The organisers also do more than just "being healthy" as they understand that there is an increase in food intolerance in the community (in particular peanuts, dairy and wheat) and they, therefore, attempt to give preference and focus on foods that provide a balanced diet, giving people alternatives such as gluten free, wheat free, dairy free, and sugar-free foods, incorporating vegetarian and vegan.

The carnival recognises the importance of having water available and will provide various free water stations throughout the carnival and water drinking initiatives.

    ABOUT LEEDERVILLE**
Did you know that Leederville was a traditional and sacred meeting and camping place for the Aboriginal people once upon a time?

Nowadays, much of Leederville's unique character is derived from its history. For thousands of years, it was a camping and meeting space for the Noongar people and was transformed into a food-producing settlement and then into the cosmopolitan township it is famous for today.

There are still many of the original cottages and landmark buildings exactly as they were constructed over 100 years ago!

This history, along with the influx of the cafes, retailers and restaurants established during the 1990's has made Leederville what it is today - a unique, vibrant, youthful atmosphere and an authentic interesting area.

Don't miss either of these two fabulous events!
