Celebrate Christmas lights and community
Summertime in Perth is street party time and the Light Up Leederville Carnival looks set to become a new favourite. Held to celebrate the first-ever Leederville Christmas lights, the Carnival offers plenty of entertainment, shopping, food and fun for all ages.
An interesting aspect of the Carnival is the commitment to sustainability. The streets are closed to traffic but visitors can easily get there by train or bike with 60 bike racks provided and a free coffee from Cranked Cafe for cyclists. Food stalls and other vendors are encouraged to use recyclable materials. Bring your water bottle and fill it for free, and in an interesting twist there will be a Reverse Vending Machine – put in an empty bottle or can and get money back!
There will be plenty of shopping opportunities with over 100 market stalls offering vintage clothes, crafts, henna tattoos and more. Local retailers will join in with footpath trading and sales galore. Foodies can enjoy street stalls and the Club Café quest for Leederville's best café.
Entertainment for youngsters includes face painting, fairies, bouncy castles, buskers and of course the Christmas lights. Older kids can head to the Skate Park for BMX displays, urban art workshops, scooter and skate demos and a DJ.
Plenty of free fun for the kids
There's no lack of adult entertainment either. How about the Carnival Bus Stage with DJs playing funk and soul, the Orchard Festival bar, Hip Hop Alley or live bands in front of the Leederville Hotel?
Add rickshaw rides, live art installations and much more for a great day out. The full program will be available 26 November, meanwhile check the Facebook page for updates.
