Cancer is a deadly group of diseases that doesn't discriminate between the old and the young. Blood cancer and related blood disorders alone claim more than 60,000 people annually. Every day, another 31 join the bandwagon around the country, from big cities like Sydney to remote townships like Dampier in Western Australia.

The Leukaemia Foundation of Australia has been working tirelessly to raise awareness of the disease and challenges faced by patients and carers all over Australia, in the hope that one day a cure can be found for everyone with leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. As the numbers continue to increase in the face of limited direct government funding, the Foundation relies on community-minded individuals and organisations for financial support in South Australia. One of the ways it raises funds for patient care as well as research is through its 'Light The Night' each year.

Light the Night' is the only twilight lantern walk which offers a fun evening out while supporting a good cause. It is open to everyone, young and old and of any fitness level as the leisurely walk takes less than an hour to complete. The charity event in Barmera is characterised by hand-held lanterns of blue, white and gold and a mass walk at twilight led by a piper with bagpipes to support the present-day victims and remember past sufferers. You may think that the Mid-Autumn Festival has come to Barmera with this unique lantern event. There are also stalls providing food and drinks to accompany the FREE live entertainment by local band McKenzie.
