Over the weekend I attended the
Life@Death exhibition opening at Gallery One in Mitcham, and I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful array of embellished art works that adorned the gallery walls. This exhibition is a unique one with intricate and alluring art works, conveying deep messages concerning
The value of the matter. This notion stems from our life encounters and the personal experiences we face along the way. For example, religion and values are a significant feature present in a variety of works in this exhibition, as well as the individual journey's of each practicing artist.
Artist
Penelope Hillam explains in her artist statement how her work symbolises the unlimited creation of God's Universe; a very spiritual and intriguing topic for many. Her beautiful piece
The Sky Never Ends, comprises a large tree that seems to be dead at the base of the canvas, however, as you look up, you begin to notice its re-growth or
're-birth'. This notion explores how lost hope can be transformed into something new, like a cycle of
'continual renewal', as Hillam states. The artist signifies the mystery of creation, as the tree reaches toward the sky, enhancing the unknown and unseen spiritual dimension that exists for so many of us.
Another favourite of mine includes this mixed media piece by artist
Dieter Engler, who discusses his
"use of matter to create art that matters". The title
This is My Bod refers to the words spoken by Jesus at the Last Supper, and therefore symbolises how communion is a sacred ritual relating to the 'broken bread' of Jesus' body. Similarly, Dieter explores this idea through
This is My Body, to represent the journey and years of work as a practicing artist.
After the nibbles and drinks, we attended the artist forum, in which a select group of participants discussed and elaborated on their pieces in more detail. This was incredibly informative and interesting, as I was given a different insight into the world of the artist and their though processes. It's fascinating how one persons perception can dramatically differ from another. Similarly, musician
Dido Durmanovic pleased the crowd with a beautiful composed piece of music called
C'est La Vie Waltz. This delicate, yet striking piece was composed specifically for the exhibition. Dido also spoke to us about his transition from living in Bosnia as a young boy, to settling into Australia, explaining that after years of living in Australia, he has lost touch with how life in Bosnia is today. A very informative and personal speech that helped the audience understand Dido, his passion for music, and how his journey and culture influences his art.
The exhibition is a remarkable combination of captivating art work showcasing the artists' impeccable talent. I was thoroughly impressed by the diverse range of media and materials incorporated in each piece and how the message of matter was uniquely translated differently by each artist.
Life@Death runs from March 18 - April 22, at Gallery One in Mitcham.
