Steph Hall's passion for art is evident as you enter her studio. The room is cosy and inviting and the walls are covered in beautiful art pieces of varying styles. If you need a break from the daily stresses of life, try this unique activity. Not only does it work as a natural relaxant, it's also actually fun, as you escape for a few hours into your own creative world.

As the class starts, if it's your first time, you'll be sure to feel a buzz of anticipation, and won't be quite sure what to expect. However, as the model steps into the centre of the room with his/her various props and unrobes, after a slight moment of embarrassment for the more shy artists such as myself, you begin to almost admire them for their confidence, and the strength to pose in one position for a certain length of time. As you start drawing, you become much more comfortable with the idea of life drawing. You begin to focus more on the lines, contours and shadows of the art piece in front of you.

With a generous supply of paper and charcoal, provided by Steph, she gets you started straight away with encouragement and enthusiasm, and guides you along with her expertise. Various warm up activities include drawing rough outlines for 2 minutes, moving around and contributing to other artists' works, and experimenting with techniques like focusing on the shadows surrounding the model rather than the lines. Then the class ends with the longer sessions, where you can focus on creating your masterpieces. You are also welcome to bring your own tools and materials for these longer poses.

Not only is it a good way to relax after a long day of uninspiring work in front of the computer, it's also great for socialising with like-minded creatives, who were all very friendly and inviting on my last visit there. No one is there to judge, experience of all levels are welcomed and encouraged. If you're someone like me, an inspired amateur, come and explore your creative side, and once you find it, you'll be sure to come back for more.

Costs are $20 per session, to register email [email protected] or join up to her group at Meetup.com, where she will provide updates and details of the model for her upcoming classes. Entry is around the back of the studio, through the side street.
