The Monash Gallery of Art (MGA) will exhibit the work of three contemporary photographers - Narelle Autio, Ruth Maddison and Catherine Nelson - in an exhibition entitled Life Aquatic, to run from Saturday 10th December 2016 to Sunday 26th February 2017.

Life Aquatic will plunge the viewer into underwater landscapes where life forms are suspended, interconnected and bubbling with quiet potential. "MGA has been turned into an oasis of fresh and splashy fun for the summer," says Stephen Zagala, MGA Senior Curator.

About the artists

Photojournalist and avid traveller Narelle Autio regularly exhibits new work, often taken in public spaces to capture the drama of everyday life.

In this exhibition, her works capture scenes above and below the waterline, tackling subjects including children frolicking in the water and the flotsam that is left behind by visitors. Her works highlight her highly regarded skills in underwater photography.

Ruth Maddison is a self-taught photographer and artist, who brings a series of 'lumen-prints' to the exhibition. These were produced using seaweed arranged on sheets of photographic paper, which are then exposed to sunlight to create the image.

Catherine Nelson's works depict a 'hyper-real' form of photography. She creates fantastical landscapes through digitally blending and distorting photos. Life Aquatic also features Nelson's new video work 'Supernova', an animated sequence of plants from the National Botanic Garden of Belgium.
