Libby serving of jazz, blues and swing at Swan Valley winery
Libby Hammer and her quintet are set to enchant an intimate audience as part of Upper Reach Winery's twilight concert series. Libby performs in the second concert of the four-concert series on Saturday, February 16.
Held on the lawn outside the cellar door and overlooking the vines most of the audience spread themselves out on picnic blankets in front of the stage and enjoy a glass of Upper Reach wine and their own picnic before Libby kicks off at 6.30pm.
The sultry Libby Hammer adds her unique sensuality to jazz, blues and swing.
Alternatively, people can enjoy the concert from a seat in the RiverBrook restaurant overlooking the lawn, along with a two-course meal.
This will be the 15th year of the concerts, held to celebrate vintage. Upper Reach owner Laura Pearse says the smooth sounds of the Libby Hammer Quintet are a perfect way to enjoy a summer evening and a glass of wine or two with either a picnic or a restaurant meal.
Libby Hammer has performed with jazz legends like James Morrison and Joe Chindamo.
Libby's cabaret jazz, blues and swing music create an ideal vibe for the Upper Reach crowd on Valentine's weekend, according to Laura. Recognised as one of Perth's premier jazz vocalists, Libby started working as a professional jazz singer in 1996 and has gone on to perform in a range of ensembles from trios to big bands.
The Upper Reach concerts are an ideal venue for Libby who loves to engage and get up close to her audience and with the dance stage on the grass in front of her, it's hard to get much closer. Before she moved into jazz, back in 1981 Libby had chorus parts in productions of La Boheme and Annie at His Majesty's Theatre in Perth.
With a Bachelor's degree in French at the University of Western Australia under her belt, in 1990 Libby performed in the circus musical Barnum at His Majesty's. But jazz became the love of her life and she joined the WA Academy of Performing Arts in 1992, and in 1996, along with three fellow students, formed the Hip Mo' Toast jazz quartet.
The RiverBrook Restaurant overlooks the concert on the lawn below.
She has gone on to perform with jazz legends like James Morrison and Joe Chindamo, in Simply Sinatra with James Flynn, with Tommy Tycho and The West Australian Symphony Orchestra, at the Fremantle International Jazz Festival, with jazz tapper Josh Hilberman (USA), and a Perth Jazz Society performance with Christoph Spendel (Germany) and two-time Grammy Winner Gary Bartz (USA).
Upper Reach Winery is at 77 Memorial Avenue, Baskerville and tickets for the concert are available at www.uppereach.com.au
Wine will be available to buy by the bottle or the glass from the Upper Reach cellar door, including sparkling reds, whites and roses. There is no BYO.
