Liar Liar Cafe

Published June 13th 2012
You know you've found a good café when your pet dogs aim straight for your usual table while being walked past on a completely unrelated mission. And yes, that café is Hawthorn's 'Liar Liar', nestled at 90 Kinkora Road just off the main drag of Glenferrie Road.

For most, the appeal of this rather hip little café lies in its reputedly delicious coffee. But I'm not going to lie: my favourite thing about perching on one of its colourful outdoor chairs, or snuggling inside on a colder day, is the accompanying cake. I can personally testify to some of the moistest carrot cake around town and the flourless chocolate number is simply divine. The mascarpone dolloped on both doesn't go astray either.

Breakfast and lunch being the other major attractions, I should probably mention them too. The 'Big Fat Liar' lives up to its name as an impressive mix of mushrooms, spinach, tomato, bacon, omelette and more. And for those sweet tooths amongst you, it's hard to go past the Ricotta Hotcakes with their snail-trail of berry coulis and maple syrup. Finally, the Pea Fritters with Salmon are gorgeous. Something about the idea of a pea fritter.

Clearly, this place has a lot going for it. But I would be as big and fat a liar as one of its special dishes if I didn't mention that the prices could be lower. Come to think of it, though, I'd be willing to pay quite a lot for that chocolate cake.
