Liam Gallagher: As It Was - Film Review (British Film Festival)



The Australian premiere of Liam Gallagher: As It Was is playing during the 2019 Mini British Film Festival across various venues from October 30 to November 24. Thus MA 15 rated documentary has a running time of 85 minutes and provides an insight into the mind and music of Liam Gallagher. Starting with the explosive and acrimonious split with his brother Noel which led to the demise of Oasis, it charts a decade of the reinvention of Liam. There is so much strong language in the show that you almost become desensitised to it, but it would not be real without it.

Liam sees himself as a rock and roll singer with attitude and that certainly comes across in the film. The highs and lows of his life are shown "warts and all" via film clips, music and interviews with those closest to him. We are taken to the childhood home of the Gallagher brothers and meet their long-suffering but extremely proud mother. She despairs of the rift in the family and wants the boys to reconcile but states that Liam has never changed - "he is who he is".

I was never a big fan of Oasis and their antics but after watching Liam Gallagher: As It Was I now have an appreciation of Liam Gallagher and his music.

This portrait of Liam Gallagher is interesting and insightful and he comes across as a passionate but impulsive man who has a deep love for his family and his craft rather than a bad boy.
