Something that caught my attention this week at Northland Shopping was the unusual activity around a shop near the Murray Rd entrance. Of course I had to know what it was all about and I came upon what can only be called a cache of LG electronics at throwaway prices.


They have refrigerators, television sets, microwaves, blue ray CD players, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, and other white goods and they all come with a 12 month warranty. There is extended warranty available for a further 2 – 4 years for those that would like that much more assurance.


My previous experiences with factory seconds and clearance sales have been limited to t-shirts and sweat pants. So this was something I was quite sceptical about. What exactly does factory seconds mean when referring to white goods and home appliances?


Under normal circumstances, I would have to shell out thousands to buy a refrigerator or an LED TV. When those same appliances are offered for sale at a considerably reduced rate, it starts to feel surreal to say the least. They were very upfront about the answer to my question. In fact they had it up there in black and white.

For one, the box or packaging could be damaged. The product itself could have scratches or dents. Ouch! Minor faults may have been found and rectified, for instance, when customers returned it within the cooling off period. Oh, my! And people are still willing to consider buying these?


However, their 12 month warranty and offers of extended warranty appeared to be working for I saw people actually buying stuff. There was definitely a lot of interest in the appliances and the sales people were rushing around trying to answer questions left, right, and centre.


I was quite taken up with a round vacuum cleaner which looked like a flying saucer and could vacuum floors all by itself without me having to tag along. It sounded really convenient. I saw myself relaxing on the couch with a good book while the little sucker cleaned the floor.


The price tag said $390 and the sales clerk said I could have it for $ 315. Just as I was loosening my grip on my wallet, the totally unexpected happened. The kind soul pointed out that it wouldn't do corners and carpeted areas. I had been prepared for a snake oil salesman spiel but then there you go. I left bemused by his honesty and not knowing what to say.


I've already had my bitter experiences with appliances that I'd fallen madly in love with that left me broken-hearted. I very desperately didn't want to add to that list. But I have a feeling I might go back. If you know something I don't about this appliance, do share.
