Every few years we travel down to Levuka for a few nights of camping, relaxing, bushwalking, four wheel driving and the stunning surroundings of the Scenic Rim. Levuka is a 2.5 hour drive from Brisbane via Beaudesert along the Mount Lindesay Highway, just ten minutes past the town of Woodenbong. Once you drive through Beaudesert the scenery from your vehicle takes you through beautiful farm land and over the stunning rainforest of Mount Lindesay. As you travel over/around Mount Lindsay the scenery is truly breathtaking due to the canopy of beautiful cyathea tree ferns and bird calls from the forest around you.


Upon entering Levuka we were greeted warmly by the hosts, Robert and Rosemary, along with their many dogs at the homestead. Here you will sign in and they will give you maps and information about the property. Be careful not to let any little ones out of the car as their farm dogs can get a little excited which small children can find a little intimidating.

The Camp Grounds

There are two camp grounds with different levels of amenities. Facilities are basic but functional - flush toilets and gas fired showers, lots of fire pits and rustic park style picnic tables. Large flat grassed camping spots of sizes ranging from small to huge were available. We chose the top camp ground, close to the fringe of the rainforest near the creek Firewood is supplied for $10 for a 35 kilogram bag.


Don't be surprised at all if you have some inquisitive cows around your camp site early in the morning as Levuka is also run as a beef cattle farm. Another reason that Levuka is popular with us is because it is dog friendly. Our dog can run around to his hearts content. He had to be tied up in the photo above for his own good as he got a little too excited by the cows.

The 4wd Tracks

Tracks are graded by the owners from 1 to 5 so you know what you are in for prior to setting off down each track. 1 is an easy track and 5 is definitely for those with a winch and a lot of experience. Bog holes and climbs are also marked on their map too, so you know what you are in for. There is a 4WD test track, lots of scenic easy tracks, and some very challenging hill climbs and muddy bog holes.


Because the property is so enormous, I would not attempt any of the harder tracks without a convoy and snatch strap or a winch. Depending on how much rain the property has had in the previous week, a moderate track can change to a hair raising one. It's always best to ask at the homestead about the current conditions. Some of the tracks through the rainforest are the hardest and if you are precious about the duco of your truck, don't go there as you are likely to come away with new pin striping. You may also come away without mud guards and a scratched and dented underbelly.

Other Activities

Mountain biking was popular the weekend we went to Levuka, and some of the tracks graded 1-2 are perfect to take in the scenery. I put water and my camera in my backpack and I was off on an early morning adventure over rolling hills. The surrounds were so beautiful, I almost forgot about the pain on some of the hill climbs. I stopped frequently, however, to capture the beauty with my camera The early morning sun made the country side seem almost surreal as it was so beautiful.


In the afternoons we all took a walk to the creek and waterfalls for a splash and to cool off. My children enjoyed the rock pools immensely and found all sorts of interesting things in the water as they fossicked around.

There is also a large dam to fish and canoe in and all sorts of wildlife to spot both during the day and at night.

Levuka is a trail-bike free property that also has a no shooting rule. Keeping in line with its family-friendly feel, you will notice signs dotted around the property to remind you that any anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated, such as a sign upon entering a camp ground saying, "Those who do donuts, will go home with no nuts."


Pricing

The usual two-day weekend fee for two adults or a family is $60.00 and the family rate, two adults and children aged under 17, is $30.00 per day. Check out is 9:30am.

Extra adults in a vehicle will incur an additional cost of $5.00 per person per day.

Firewood: $10 per 35 kilo bag

Directions: 8 kilometres past Woodenbong take Beaury Creek Road on your left. Travel 10 kilometres along Beaury Creek Road and you will find Levuka on your right. See their website for more details.
