Leuralla Toy & Railway Museum, Leura (Blue Mountains)

Set in the breathtaking Blue Mountains in a lovely stately home of the Evatt family this museum is more than your toy and train collection. With beautiful gardens surrounding the home and photographs illustrating the career of Dr. H V Evatt who was the first Australian to head up the UN.

What also makes Leuralla Toy & Railway Museum more interesting is that it is the largest toy, railway and memorabilia museum in the Southern Hemisphere! As contrast the garden and house overlooks the extensive Jamieson Valley with awe-inspiring views.

The massive collection of world-class displays of the 20th century ranges from Barbie, Popeye, Tintin, Alice in Wonderland and many more, it will sure keep you, the kids and of course if you are a serious collector entertained. The museum is set in a historic early 20th century mansion, set on a lush five acre award-winning gardens filled with interactive displays and picturesque scenes.

Inside the beautiful historic mansion are small train models on display along with the beautiful setting furniture and decor of some rooms of the original setting of the Evatt home.

The Toys, Dolls and Collectables are so ever impressive with a historic range of Tin Toys which includes penny toys (penny toys were sold in Victorian times), tin plates boats, aeroplanes, lead solders, farm animals and doll houses.

There is also a massive display of war zone with a collection of Nazi toys and a battle scene- it was emotional but at the same time quite striking on the displays.

The Doll and Teddy Bear collection consisted of famous names like Lenci, Kathe Kruse and many more. The Lenci Dolls on display are all pre war examples and were produced in Torino, Italy. (During the Second World War the dolls on displays were dressed typically in military uniform). On display as well were other dolls from Kathe Kruse, Nora Wellings, and Steiff Bears which are very interesting too!

The extremely famous Barbie, Ben and Friends are also displayed here at the museum; they have an extensive range of the dolls from 1959 to the current day in Australia.

As you move along to the Model Trains and Collectables the display is beyond implausible with hundreds of lead figures representing farm, zoo, garden, passengers, soldiers and railway personnel, along with model trains, boats, aeroplanes, trucks and cars. The figures are so lifelike in such a miniature version it was so incredible on how they crafted them so real lifelike.

My partner absolutely loved it here and loved the fact that he was explaining all the displays to me.

Today the 'new' house, redesigned and completed in 1912, is still a family home, but now houses the fine and very impressive displays of NSW Toy & Railway Museum and Dr. H V Evatt Memorial Museum.

I highly recommend this visit whether you are coming as a family, a serious collector, history enthusiast, lovers or even on your own you are sure not to be disappointed with the amazing displays around the historic home and gardens!

Typically, the gentleman behind the counter said on average it takes around one hour to view both inside and out- but like always my partner and I spent the whole opening hours here...
