Each Spring the Leukaemia Foundation organises a series of walks across the nation to raise funds for individuals and families affected by blood cancer. It's a beautiful and amazing spectacle to behold.
Light the Night gives participants the opportunity to raise money as they walk with different coloured lanterns according to their situation:
Gold lanterns are for those walking to remember a loved one.
White lanterns are for those representing themselves in their own journey with the illness.
Blue lanterns are for anyone else wishing to support others.
In Newcastle the event will take place on our beautiful foreshore, Wharf Rd, Newcastle. The night will begin at 5:30 when you collect your lantern. There is an official welcome and lantern lighting ceremony and the walk begins at 7pm. You can sign up to be part of the night on the Leukaemia Foundation
website and you will receive your free lantern. Registering beforehand ensures you have a lantern to walk with but if you leave it to the night, you will have to pay $5 for a lantern or may miss out altogether.
The aim of the walk is to have walkers raising money through sponsorship or donation. The Leukaemia Foundation asks walkers to raise $100 if they can. The average participant raises $280. If you raise over $500 there is a commemorative 2013 hope pin, a scarf and more to receive as a thank you.
The money raised during the Light the Night event will go towards valuable research into blood cancer. The Leukaemia Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation helping research in leading institutions across Australia as well as helping those directly affected by the disease and related blood disorders.
If you cannot make it on the night, you can still make a
donation on the website or sponsor a lantern so someone else can walk.
