A mother’s loss becomes a nation’s obsession

Riverside Theatres is proudly presenting a strictly limited season of Letters to Lindy, the latest work by award-winning playwright Alana Valentine (The Sugar House, Dead Man Brake, Parramatta Girls). Tickets are now on sale.

A Merrigong Theatre Company Production in association with Canberra Theatre Centre, Letters to Lindy comes to Lennox Theatre, Riverside Parramatta for four performances only, from 12th to 14th July as part of its national tour.

Letters to Lindy explores the public's fraught relationship with one of 20th century Australia's most iconic figures - Lindy Chamberlain.

The disappearance of Lindy's 9 week old baby, Azaria Chamberlain, on the night of 17 August 1980 captivated the nation.

Lindy Chamberlain's claim that her baby was taken by a dingo was denied and discredited by zealous police and a flawed legal system.

In September 1982, in one of Australia's most publicised murder trials, Lindy Chamberlain was charged with Azaria's murder. She spent more than three years in prison and some 32 years after Azaria's death, her version of events were officially supported by a coroner.

Letters to Lindy centres on the media circus, the rumours, the mob mentality, and a nation's prejudices over three decades.

"…a fascinating collage depicting Australian attitudes to grief, justice, celebrity, and to women who do not conform to expectations…Cronin's pitch-perfect Lindy…is warm, earthy, personable..." - Sydney Morning Herald

Based on actual letters received by Lindy Chamberlain from members of the public, Letters to Lindy is touching, authentic and provides a deep insight into one of the most compelling legal and human dramas of our times. It paints a singular portrait of the heartbreak, wisdom and resilience of a grieving mother and her 30-year fight for justice.

The touring production features the original cast of Jeanette Cronin (TV's Crownies and Rake) as Lindy Chamberlain, alongside Glenn Hazeldine, Phillip Hinton and Jane Phegan, and is skillfully directed by Darren Yap (Ladies Day, Miracle City).

Merrigong Theatre Company Artistic Director and CEO Simon Hinton said, "Merrigong is particularly proud of the work we have produced in Letters to Lindy, a part of our continued focus on producing and presenting new Australian work. The story of Lindy Chamberlain is an iconic and important one for all Australians, so we are thrilled to be able to tour it to such a wide audience across the country."
