Spanish writer and literary critic Jorge Carrión is participating in a FREE English language public lecture entitled 'Let's Talk About Literature' on Tuesday 10 July 2018 at Instituto Cervantes Sydney.Held from 6.00pm, this special event will see Carrión in conversation with Professor Lilit Thwaites, an award-winning Melbourne-based literary translator, and an honorary research fellow in contemporary Spanish literature at La Trobe University.During the evening, Carrión will discuss his fascinating life and what inspires his popular fiction and non-fiction books, which have been translated into Chinese, Portuguese, Italian, German, French, Polish and English.Born in Tarragona in 1976, Carrión has lived most of his life in the town of Mataro and in Barcelona. He has a PhD in Humanities from the Pompeu Fabra University and manages the Master in Creative Writing at the same institution. He has lived in Buenos Aires, Rosario and Chicago. He publishes regularly in several Spanish journals and magazines such as El Pais, La Vanguardia or Letras Libres. He is the author of a tetralogy of fiction (that includes Los muertos, Los huerfanos, Los turistas and Los difuntos) and is also the author of various non-fiction books, such as Australia, Un viaje, Teleshakespeare and Librerias. He was the curator of the exhibition "Las variaciones Sebald", at the Contemporary Culture Center of Barcelona (CCCB).Professor Lilit Thwaites was the first recipient of the inaugural Multicultural NSW Early Career Translator Prize (2015) and was recently awarded the Spanish Order of Civil Merit for her contribution to the promotion of Spanish culture in Australia.Translation highlights include The Librarian of Auschwitz (Antonio Iturbe, 2017), named one of Publishers Weekly's Best Books of 2017, and recently awarded the Gold Medal (Teen Category, Sydney Taylor 2018 Book Awards) and Tears in Rain (Rosa Montero), one of World Literature Today's 75 Notable Translations of 2012.All are welcome to attend this FREE fascinating and engaging public lecture centring on language, culture and literature.
