If you are looking for some delightfully fun entertainment that the whole family or group of friends can participate in, look no further than the numerous scavenger hunts devised by Let's Roam.

The clever designers have put together a whole host of riddles and clues to solve, with a few challenges thrown in, that will have your team laughing, learning and exploring your chosen city.

A traditional scavenger hunt is where you are asked to physically collect items from a prepared list and this method still has it's place in our modern world, however, Let's Roam have moved with the times and their hunts are all conducted on your mobile phone. This is what will keep young children through to teenagers engaged and will probably be the only time that parents will encourage their children to use their devices!

I had been looking for an activity for quite a while that is appealing for each member of our family (not easy with teenage children who have a mobile phone addiction), something that would make us all communicate with each other (some would say this is impossible), get us out in the fresh air (and the kids out of their beds) that is also fun, maybe indulge in some culture and it can't be boring ('can't be boring' was an essential request from our two teenagers). So when I was given the opportunity to review Let's Roam's Perth Scavenger Hunt, it felt like the universe had come to my rescue.

The process to download the app, buy tickets, activate your game, set up your team with members (you will need to make up a team name), choose your role within the team (such as a photographer, explorer, brainiac, youngster - yes you can get your 5 year old involved) and get to the starting point, was easy with the clear and concise step-by-step instructions.

Each team member is given, direct to their device, snippets of information, clues to solve and additional tasks, like taking photos, singing a verse of a song or counting things, at each destination. Some will be team driven and some will be individual tasks.

The genius thing about this, is that is makes you survey the area that you probably think you know really well, and whilst doing this, you are likely to see something that you have never seen before. This happened to us on quite a few occasions during our game.

After successfully completing each location, your game updates, tells you how far you are through the game and reminds you to check out your Challenge tab for any individual player challenge plus some interesting trivia you will be excited to know!

We found it easy to navigate from one location to the next, but if you are not familiar with the area, you can refer to the map on the app, but you will lose some points by doing this. So if you are playing as part of a big group of teams and are playing to win by completing the hunt in the quickest time with the most amount of points, I would suggest using your whole team's knowledge and super sleuth-skills to crack the sometimes cryptic clues to locate the next destination.

As your team progress through the game, you will be asked to take random photos (eg snap the tallest building currently closest to you), specific photos (eg a dog, barista, a fountain etc) and will be asked to do and say specific things that relate to the location you are at.

We were asked to do a handstand. You will have to take part in the game yourselves to find out why!

The hunt can be walked at your own pace, but some of the questions you need to answer are time specific, so you cannot hang about with those answers as you get more points the quicker you answer and the time doesn't stop until all of your team have answered.

You can do the hunt any day and any time, so fits in with everyones schedules. It is a great way to explore any city, whether it is your home city (you will be surprised what you see and learn, I guarantee it) or a new city you are unfamiliar with. You can even pause the game while you have a bite to eat.

Our game took us four hours from start to finish which included stopping for lunch. It could be quicker but we ended up in locations we have never been to before, so we explored those fully before moving on.

Young children will be so absorbed with the whole experience, that they will not notice the amount of walking they are doing, especially if you stop for lunch and sit down at locations while waiting for everyone to complete their individual or group tasks.

We came across a really big tree and it sparked a conversation about how old it was. Actually having a decent conversation with our teenager daughters was amazing! An unexpected perk and I thank you for that moment Let's Roam!

I have a few tips to ensure your experience is maximised:

1. Check the weather and go prepared for the forecast conditions, eg take wet weather gear, sunhat, sunscreen, etc.

2. Ensure all phones have 100% battery charge and take a power bank (or two) to recharge phones on-the-go. The app seemed to use a lot of battery life and one of our team member's phone went flat about 3/4 of the way through. The game still continued but because we couldn't all answer the questions, we had to wait until it timed out before we could move on (losing precious points).

3. You pass lots of places to eat and drink plus shops to buy snacks/drinks etc.

4. Ensure ALL team members are ready to proceed to the next location at the same time and no one is to race forward in the app/game without consulting where their teammates are and asking them if it ok to proceed. Some team members may be completing individual tasks so may appear to be doing some strange things!

Choose the perfect activity for your day/event from several options:

City Scavenger Hunts is the perfect hunt for friends, family, birthday parties for all ages (you can even give the scavenger hunt as a present), team building, girls/boys/stag/hen activity, etc.

If you are looking for a party atmosphere and want to know where the best bars are, then you need to select the Bar Hunts and Crawls option.

Fancy a ghost hunt? Then the Spooky Ghost Tour Scavenger Hunts will be your choice.

There is even a hunt geared around Date Nights. Perfect for first dates, double dates, romantic dates and 'something-different-to-do' date nights.

So what should you expect on a hunt?

Expect to have lots of fun having a rewarding experience in the fresh air with a small or big team of people you may or may not know (at the beginning of the hunt anyway but good friends by the end), seeing things you may not ever have noticed, learning cool new things you may not have known and enjoying a wonderful day out in our beautiful city, plus you will also create lasting memories. Sounds alright doesn't it and it's not too good to be true! It's a reality with the Let's Roam app and their scavenger hunts.

So, would I recommend it?

I think you know the answer to that! A resounding YES!!! It is a great way to spend quality time with family and friends, and even though I have now done the Perth hunt, I would still do it again with another team in the future. I will be telling everyone this is something they need to do with overseas visitors and local and interstate family members and friends. It is a fun and perfect way to reconnect/discover a wonderful city. It definitely gave us the experience we were looking for.

The Perth Hunt is an experience for all ages and all fitness levels with a total walking distance of around 3.5 kms.

This is a great Christmas gift for that somebody who has everything and just perfect for a teenager for a birthday party or present. They will feel so independent completing the hunt; it is safe and they will have a ball! It will even get their competitive juices flowing!

Why not create an event on Facebook and invite your friends to your first/next Scavenger Hunt? There are 300 plus to choose from worldwide.

Perhaps you have a layover with just a few hours to explore an unfamiliar city? Please remember the Let's Roam app!
