When life is simple it can be refreshing. One word to describe the minimal and post-minimal artwork at
Heide Museum of Modern Art's Less is More Exhibition is 'simple'.
The premise behind the exhibition is that artwork does not need to be visually complicated for it to be meaningful.
Less is More explores the late modernist movements of minimal and post-minimal art from the 1960s.
Pieces from over 30 Australian artists are displayed in the exhibition, including paintings, sculptures, videos and light works. As you walk around you need to be careful not to trip over some of the artwork, such as Untitled Floor Structure (1969), on the floor. Some of the pieces have typed narrative next to them explaining the reason for the work while others have nothing but the title and artist prompting the viewer to ask both "How?" and "Why?".
A favourite of mine was "The Boohoohoos", a piece created with polymer paint on plastic by Mikala Dwyer. Why did you like it? I hear you ask. The answer is simple but probably not what you'd expect from someone reviewing an art exhibition. I liked the name.
I wasn't allowed to take any photos so if you'd like to see a bit of what you're in for before you go, click
here .
The exhibition is being held from the 3rd of August until the 4th of November. Entry costs $14 for adults, $12 for seniors and $10 for concession holders and gives you entry to all the
current exhibitions on at Heide.
Once you have seen
Less in More and explored the other
exhibitions head outside to the
Sculpture Park and Plaza . You can also enjoy a bite to eat at
Cafe Vue where much of the produce used to create the delicious meals is from the Heide Vegetable Gardens.
