Looking for a charming, comfortable base for a weekend in the Southern Highlands? Leslie Cottage in Mittagong ticks all the boxes. It is a heritage sandstone house built in 1879 by a local stonemason. It is more a house than a cottage with plenty of space for a family of four or two couples to share.
Inside and out Leslie Cottage is charming, authentic and inviting. There are two bedrooms, one with a queen bed, the other with two single beds that can be configured as a queen. There is a charming 'snug'' at the front, a cosy sitting room, a decent sized dining room and a quaint and well appointed kitchen with a beautiful AGA oven. There are two bathrooms, one with a shower and the other with a beautiful tub beside a stained glass window. There's a third toillet next to a well equipped laundry. There's a delightful walled garden, and two outdoor sitting areas.
All this is perfect but it's the little touches provided by the host that sets Leslie Cottage apart, e.g. the fireplaces (gas) turned on for our arrival, the knee rugs left at various cosy spots around the house, the champagne in the fridge and a cake waiting for afternoon tea. Essential supplies such as bread, milk, team, coffee and some breakfast cereals are provided. Then there's the modern comforts such as a gas kettle barbecue, electric blankets and free broadband wi-fi.
Mittagong is a perfect base to explore the Southern Highlands. It is less busy than nearby Bowral, with less restaurants and shops, but has an excellent shopping centre for groceries and other supplies for your stay. There are a number of cafes and hotels and antique shops. There is a small lake at the end of the street, perfect for a walk after a day of touring or for walking the dog, Pets are allowed at Leslie Cottage. With its walled garden, it's perfect for small dogs.
