Back in the 70s and 80s this prime piece of real estate in the heart of Fortitude Valley was a less than honest establishment. Now Les Bubbles are serving up meat of a different kind on sparkling crockery and shiny silverware.
Formerly known as Bubbles, this reinvented new venue has been shown some chic and classed up into a Parisian style steak restaurant. The menu is simple; in fact it is centered on one signature dish. That is the cooked to perfection (medium rare unless asked) steak paired with a light, crunchy green salad, a choice of enticing creamy sauces along with the jewel in their beret, bottomless frites. You heard me correctly, bottomless fries! Of course, if steak isn't your thing or you have dietary requirements, they also have salmon and vegetarian options you can ask your waiter for.
Because of their choice to focus heavily on the one dish, they can do it flawlessly. I had thought after ravishing my steak I wouldn't be taking advantage of the all-you-can-eat fries but after tasting their crispy, seasoned deliciousness I couldn't help myself. Make sure you try it with the peppercorn and cognac sauce. If I had prior preparation, I would have been wearing my stretchy pants. And if you still have room after all those fries, definitely try their amazing French desserts. Crème caramel that melts in your mouth or the fluffiest of raspberry soufflés or a coffee infused ice-cream sundae.
The venue pokes fun at its colourful past. On the wall is a glowing red sign that states 'We regret to inform you that we are no longer a brothel, Management' and their menu reads 'Whilst this establishment no longer accepts bribes, tips for exceptional service are always appreciated'.
Another throwback to its former days is the Bathhouse downstairs, which has been transformed into a bar complete with white tiles coating the walls and floor and a spa bath for anyone who dares to get in. Although the bar may not have me craving to go back with its less-than-homey feel, the food definitely does!
