Food and wine in a beautiful setting
When I co-incidentally met professional colleague Jane Mitchell on the deck of the then ailing local pub at Leonards Mill in Second Valley, she announced she was changing industries and becoming a Restauranteur.
That was in late 2010. I knew it would take a lot of work to not only upgrade the facility but to win back a clientele that had slowly drifted away since the venue's heyday in the 1980's and 90's.
Well, Jane and partner Alan Greig, have not only succeeded but now prevail over this very popular destination for fine dining in South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula. This award winning restaurant offers something for everyone. Located on the busy route to Kangaroo Island the restaurant is open for lunch and coffee from Thursday to Monday with dinner available on Friday and Saturday nights.
Dining in the garden is just stunning on a beautiful day, and the deck is equally pleasant. Inside the restaurant, there is a bar area for a quiet drink and beautifully appointed dining and function areas on three levels, rising around the still working but not operating mill.
On my recent visit, my daughter and I enjoyed the two course fixed menu for $55 per head with a very nice bottle of Kangaroo Island wine.
The food was delicate, lovingly prepared and presented and very satisfying. I especially noticed to use of fresh local ingredients, a feature of this establishment including nasturtiums in the salad from the local waterway.
There are fixed price two and three-course options, and la carte choices from tapas-style snacks to beautiful main courses, and then there is always dessert.
If you are thinking of dinner, there is some accommodation on site, and plenty of alternative accommodation nearby so that you can spoil yourselves with a selection of wines for any particular occasion and not need to travel far for the night.
