When in Fiji, people will naturally want to go Island hopping and with 333 different islands making up Fiji, it would be crazy not to see some of the other ones too! This however can sometimes prove to be too costly for some people or too noisy and touristy for others. So, instead of heading over to the usual popular island resort with every single other person from your hostel or hotel, why not go in search of your very own hidden paradise?
One small island which makes for a lovely alternative option but which isn't always at the top of people's island hopping lists is the island of Leleuvia. Situated a 40 minute boat ride away from the main island of Viti Levu it is a very reasonably priced island with a slightly more relaxed feel than some of the hard core party islands.
Getting to the designated pick up point is pretty straight forward. From Suva you need to take a local bus to Nausouri Town and then take another bus to Bau Landing. This will set you back around FJD$5.
Arriving at the pick up point can feel somewhat strange as it is essentially what looks like an abandoned bus stop shed on the edge of a river. Fear not though as the resort speed boat will come and collect you.
Once you have arrived and signed in you will be able to drop your luggage off at your chosen accommodation, be it a traditional thatched roof bure on the beach, a dorm or a family lodge, and start to enjoy your paradise island get away.
Swimming and kayaking are just some of the many water related activities offered on the island. There are also the options of going diving and snorkeling meaning you can fully appreciate the beautiful coral reefs and clusters of tropical fish which surround the island.
If you're not as keen to go and play in the sea then you could always find yourself a hammock on the beach and read whilst topping up your tan. Or perhaps go and explore the island* and hunt for shells (there are some amazing ones scattered around). Make sure once it starts to get darker that you find a great place to watch the sun set and definitely take a camera with you!
After dinner there is the option to sit around a relaxing beach bonfire, join in with a kava** drinking session which, when in Fiji, is a must or just do some star gazing and soak up the atmosphere. Alternatively you could stay in the outdoor restaurant/eating area and enjoy a few alcoholic beverages with other guests (this can become expensive though so perhaps consider bringing some of your own rations too in order to save on costs).
Prices for this island are very affordable compared to other more well trodden ones on the backpacker route.
