Humour and heart - a great combination

Multi-award-winning theatre company 3bCreative's latest production is a season of two locally written one-act plays to be performed at Maleny Playhouse and "Live @ the Hive", a new venue upstairs at Buderim Hall.

New intimate theatre venue, The Hive

Anne Grant, creative whiz and patron of the performing arts, is the driving force behind 3bCreative, and its artistic and stage director of this production.

Anne has a mission to make theatre accessible to a variety of performers and audiences and to present local writing. " 3bCreative actively provides opportunities for showcasing Australian scripts, especially those written locally. These often don't make it into production or onto the stage local writing isn't always valued, and its bankability is not guaranteed," said Anne.

In this instance, the local writer is Joy Hinckley. Anne and Joy most recently worked together on The Lind's Arms and the Man, with Joy directing and Anne designing wonderful sets and costumes.

"I was told once to always choose good collaborators," says Anne, adding, "Passionate people are the best, those with strong opinions, those who challenge or disagree. The best have opinions and only say yes if they really mean it."

Joy agrees. "This collaboration means allowing the scripts to grow and be refined by the theatrical workshop process. The work put in by 3bCreative when staging my play Fencing in 2019 led to a tight and dynamic script which has been published by The Australian Script Centre."

Both plays are timely works of heart and humour which will delight.

Legacy centres on a conversation on a park bench, between Danny, an elderly man, and his carer, Crystal.

A call from Crystal's partner about a lost toy leads to a discussion about making choices in difficult times.

Legacy will make you think but more importantly, it will make you feel.

Holding the Centre takes place in a small community centre.

Joanne and Mel run the centre, squabbling like an old married couple, but holding the centre together despite a serious lack of money.

Colourful volunteer Fifi, and elderly and cheeky homeless woman Beanie, add to the mix of personalities trying to get away with an audacious plan to raise much-needed funds.
