[ADVERT]The West End of Brisbane is a strange little place, resting as it does in a small peninsula formed by the Brisbane River. Away from the major traffic routes, the area has grown at a very different pace to the rest of Brisbane.

The area around Boundary Street is well-known for its array of bars and restaurants - but it's down on Hardgrave Road that some of the best ethnic eats can be found.

Possibly the best of these is the , down near the corner with Dornoch Terrace. The restaurant itself is largely anonymous during the day, with only a couple of signs alerting people to the fact that some of Brisbane's best food can be found here.

Come at night though and you're in no doubt. Walk past between 6pm and 10pm Tuesday-Saturday and you'll inevitably find tables of happy punters getting stuck in.

The night I went was with some former workmates, two of which were Lefkas veterans. It was on their recommendation that we began with the five dips plate (taramosalata, tzatziki, skordalia, eggplant and homous) with the taramosalata (fish rose blended with garlic, lemon and olive oil) the unanimous favourite; the pita bread it came with was worth the price of admission alone.

Time for mains then - not that we had much room left. One went with the grilled haloumi, two went for the gyros (one lamb, one chicken), while I got to enjoy the best lamb shank this side of a Madrid restaurant.

All were ridiculously delicious - although we were all so full from the pita and dip that only one plate was minus leftovers when the waitresses came to collect the plates.

This didn't stop us from having some Turkish delight to finish; while throughout the waiters were attentive, quick with a joke, and most importantly looked like they were enjoying their job.

It's no surprise though: when you're dishing out good food to a restaurant constantly full of people who've made full use of the bottleshop next door (Lefkas is BYO-only), then why wouldn't you enjoy your job?

Good food, good service - and most importantly, good value - West End's hiding one of Brisbane's best restaurants.
