Lebanon Carnival is an annual event which brings together young artists from the Australian Lebanese community who use music and dance to encourage and promote understanding of the Lebanese culture in Australia.
The festival will present a showcase of the cultural history and modern day influences through traditional Lebanese performance.
Held at the Darling Harbour Harbourside Ampitheatre on the 6th November and presented by the
Cedars of Lebanon Folkloric Group , the Lebanese Carnival is an opportunity to enjoy the folklore, arts, crafts and music of Lebanese Australians.
The Cedars Of Lebanon Folkloric Group was formed in 1977 by Elie Akouri after migrating to Australia seeking new opportunities. The group aims to teach their children, and others, about their history and culture through the presentation of music, plays, dance and theatrical sketches. The groups motto is "IT IS NOT WITH WORDS THAT NATIONS ARE BUILT BUT WITH DEEDS"
The Carnival gives us the opportunity to enjoy lively performances of Dabke and bellydancing.
Dabke is a Lebanese folk dance that is widely performed at weddings and joyous occasions. Dabke in Arabic is literally "stamping of the feet".
The leader of the dabke heads the line, alternating between facing the audience and the other dancers.
The ever-popular bellydancers' hips will shimmy and shimmer as they skillfully move their bodys in their colourful costumes and veils.
Entertainment on the day will be performed by professional performers as well as music and singing performances from schools and community groups.
Lebanon Carnival will be held at the Harbourside Amphitheatre in Darling Harbour near the Harbourside Shopping Centre on Sunday the 6th November 2011 from 11am until 5pm.
