Fun creative workshop
I recently attended a workshop at Ink & Spindle in Kensington, to master the art of screen printing in a day. If you're anything like me you'll love the challenge of learning something new and interesting.
The workshop was practical in nature and the teacher Liz Doust instructed participants on each step of the screen printing process. We also got the chance to create our own take home, hand screen printed textiles. Liz, a creative type, runs her own business Ambette, which sells handmade designer cases for ipads, kindles, iphones and macbooks.
During the workshop we were shown how to create our own stencils, then use the screen printing equipment to print onto calico. Participants were encouraged prior to bring any materials or clothing to use for their screen printing project on the day, that way we could create our own uniquely designed garment. I chose to make an elephant stencil and used it to create a t-shirt for my son.
Screen printing in itself is quite an involved process that requires patience and attention to detail. Liz was more than happy to help everyone get the hang of the process and assist with technique. She shared her knowledge in a friendly and casual manner, which enabled everyone to get the most out of the workshop, as she allowed plenty of time for actually practising screen printing.
If you're after an interesting workshop where you can learn a new skill and utilise your creative side, then this is for you. Spending the day in a real art studio creating my own unique pieces was an experience that won't easily be forgotten.
Liz is now conducting the workshops through Colour Box Studio - a pop-up art space. You can find out about upcoming workshops at the Colour Box Studio website.
