The "Learn to Ride" bike riding centre in Tuggeranong was opened in March 2017, as an ACT Government initiative. There is also a new park recently opened on the north side of Canberra, at Lake Ginninderra in Belconnen (see map here ). These two colourful parks were built to teach kids road safety rules, as Canberra has a strong bike riding culture around the city and suburbs. In the Learn to Ride areas, kids can ride their bikes or scooters on pretend roads, around roundabouts, stop at pedestrian crossings and look out for animals on the road. These fun and imaginative centres are designed for children between preschool and Year 4, with everything suited to their size.

On a cold winter's day, our family packed our daughters bike in the car, grabbed her bike helmet and went to try out the Tuggeranong Learn to Ride centre for ourselves. We were surprised and excited, by what we found...

As parents and carers sat on benches around the outside of the pathways and watched, children rode around and pretended to "beep" at each other and stop for people who were crossing the road. New friends were made, bike comparisons were discussed and the kids thoroughly enjoyed playing in their own bike riding environment. The scooter-riders were also happy to find a small incline at one end of the park, for a short area of freewheeling action

If you have smaller children, there are small red stools in the centre of the "pedestrian area" to sit and be close by.

Although our visit was cut short on a cold winter's day, is easy to see that during the warmer months this bike riding area will be busy from sunrise to sunset. Tuggeranong Lake is the perfect area for families to have a picnic afterwards, before more bike riding along the Lake Tuggeranong Circuit to the playground nearby.

On our visit, we were also pleased to see a coffee van, Mimi's Pit Stop , which we learnt has been at this location each weekend since summer. What a find! Mimi unloads tables and chairs for diners to sit and relax whilst enjoying her coffees, chia puddings and healthy options on the menu. It is a good location for people who are walking along the lake path, parents at the bike park and also for people walking their dogs home after playing at the #tbm =lcl&q=tuggeranong">lake fenced dog park&rlfi=hd:;si:11974040071584430657;mv:!1m3!1d84.68153152643116!2d149.06864845!3d-35.4109287!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i179!2i5!4f13.1&spf=1497730617277 Dog Park nearby. If you need a coffee hit over the weekend, Mimi's is open between 8am - 3pm.

The Learn to Ride bike riding centres are the perfect way to spend weekends and school holidays with the kids. Why not pack up the bikes and check out your northside or southside Learn to Ride centre this weekend? I can guarantee - they are not going to want to leave!
