Do you like to boogie to the olden day rock and roll hits? Do you enjoy being thrown around by an energetic dance partner? Do you own a poodle skirt or style your hair in a quiff? If you answered yes to one or more of those questions, you are a perfect candidate for jive dance lessons.

Jive dancing is a style of ballroom dancing that originated in the 1940's. It is a livelier style than traditional ballroom dancing and incorporates the swing, Jitterbug and Latin dance styles that were popular during its creation. Jive can be danced to any music with a tempo range of about 200 beats per minute, such as swing, rock and roll and boogie-woogie. Check out these Youtube videos for an example:

  • You can learn how to jive at these Brisbane dance schools.

Jills Jive (264 Melton Road, Nundah) offers a range of dance styles in a well-equipped studio. Turn up for a rock and roll, social ballroom, Latin or zumba class and learn the style in air conditioned comfort. After class, enjoy a meal and a drink at the licensed cafe and bar onsite.

Le Step teaches modern jive, a style that takes the traditional footwork of the 1950's original and updates it so that it can be danced to the Top 40 hits. Le Step has studios in Brisbane (Holland Park, Chermside, West End and Tarragindi) and the Gold Coast (Southport). There are three different difficulty levels and first timers receive their class half price.

For a vigorous work out that recalls the olden days of rock and roll, give jive a try.
