The 5 week cooking course is run by Jamie's Ministry of Food Trainers in a purpose-built mobile kitchen. The truck has travelled all around QLD since January 2012, from Cairns to the Gold Coast and as far west as Mount Isa, now into Brisbane for two 5 weeks stints.
The program is delivered by The Good Foundation and supported by Queensland Health, which provides funding to support the delivery of the program throughout Queensland.
Jamie's Ministry of Food home-cooking courses are based on Jamie Oliver's beliefs about cooking and the associated impact on healthy living. The 'back to basics' cooking course is a hands-on cooking class led by a team of dedicated Food Trainers and local B volunteers. The course covers information on ingredients, shopping, budgeting, meal planning and food preparation for basic cooking.
The program aims to inspire people to get back to basics in the kitchen. It's about teaching people to start cooking for themselves again by equipping them with some simple skills and knowledge to do so. The program inspires and empowers change in the way they and their families eat, and how they think about food.
It is taught in a fun, social and relaxed atmosphere, so the program is designed for all skill levels, and anyone aged 12 and over is welcome to take part.
Father and daughter team, Kurt and Olivia, decided to come along to the Ministry of Food course to spend quality time together, learn new skills and have some fun along the way. Olivia really flourished in the kitchen, particularly improving her confidence and knife skills. As for Kurt, he loved experiencing something new with his daughter, watching her take on tasks with gusto!
Each week participants will learn how to cook simple main meals, desserts, salads and sides, using fresh ingredients. The recipes cooked during class are taken home to be enjoyed whilst you will also share a freshly cooked meal at the end of each class, prepared by the Food Trainer.
Ruth loved taking the food home with her and sharing it with her husband, who adored the pizza and meatballs despite claiming he didn't like Italian food. Ruth's family loved the meals and stories from class so much her grand-daughter has now enrolled with her dad. The family cannot wait to cook the recipes they've learnt together!
But Jamie's Ministry of Food courses aren't just about teaching you how to cook healthy meals from scratch, they are also a fun, social gathering each week! Lee-Anne, Nicky and Jade became bench buddies and bonded over family, fun times and being Jamie Oliver fans from way back.
"The amount of information you learn is amazing and it is so much fun! Plus you make new friends."
