Block printing onto textiles is one of the oldest methods of decorating otherwise plain fabric. It is easy to buy pre-cut printing blocks online or in retail stores, but if you'd prefer to make your own custom block, how would you go about it?
The Handmaker's Factory offer classes in Kensington. Taught by Leslie Keating from
Maze & Vale , her classes cover the basics of:
creating a design suitable for block printing
how to transfer a design onto the carving block
how to carve with a lino cutter set
which paints and ink are suitable for stamping on fabric
which base cloths work best.
There will be time allotted to work on a simple design, participants will then work at carving their stamps and can have a play with stamping using supplied inks and cloth. Participants will take home their carved stamps as well as their samples of stamped cloth which are covered by a materials fee which is included in the price of the class.
A range of items to provide inspiration will be on hand but participants are welcome to bring their own sketches, books or other items and are also welcome to bring their own cloth or fabric projects to stamp on.
There are currently two classes available for 2014, one on 8 February and another 26 April, both running from 10am - 1pm.
Classes are held at Ink & Spindle Studio, Suite 206, 10 Elizabeth St Kensington VIC (enter via Elizabeth St, and make your way up to level 2. Look out for the big Ink & Spindle sign).
To book onto the workshop, you can do so online

As well as stamp carving, The Handmaker's Factory also offer classes in knitting, crocheting and sewing. Find out about future classes
