If I had to choose only one season as my favourite, it would be autumn. Autumn is one step closer to winter, which means that the weather starts to slowly cool down, but it also marks the start of leaves changing colour and eventually falling from trees. Once these leaves have fallen, they are either raked, collected and then removed accordingly, raked into large piles for people and animals to play with as they wish, or simply left to blow and collect in the wind.



However, this year's autumn season has marked the arrival of the unique Leafie family to Adelaide, making this autumn just that little bit more interesting and exciting, and adding another to the list of what happens with the fallen leaves.

The Leafie family are a collection of large autumnal sculptures who were born during the recent WOMADelaide Festival at Botanic Park. Creatively designed by French performance installation company Le Phun, these leafy characters are created using leaves collected from Botanic Park last year, and have been constructed with help from students and graduates of the Adelaide Central School of Art, providing a "great opportunity for local South Australian artists to gain experience working with international artists" (Lord Mayor of Adelaide, Sandy Verschoor).

In speaking of the figures specifically, Verschoor also said that the Leafies will bring some intrigue to the city's streets, and that "the city of Adelaide is excited to partner with WOMAD on this fun and creative project that will surprise and delight."



Due to receiving such a warm welcome from the public, eliciting said surprise and delight during their WOMAD trial run, the intriguing and mysterious figures have now shown curiosity and appeared to migrate away from their home in Botanic Park, to explore the city and visit unsuspecting visitors and tourists. WOMADelaide Director Ian Scobie says that Leafies intend to bring some delightful magic to the City of Adelaide, and tend to "imitate what they see in us", as they climb trees and light poles, ride bicycles, play musical instruments, read books, check in to hotels.



The Leafie family must leave Adelaide on April 28, and there is no guarantee that they will visit again, so be sure to be quick to ensure you don't miss out on your chance to witness the delightful magic and intrigue which the Leafies bring to the City of Adelaide. The Leafies love to hide, so make sure you look out for them very carefully.
