Located in bustling Mentone, Le Roi Cafe is a cosy and welcoming place to stop for breakfast any time of day. With a menu which largely consists of variations of eggs on toast, Le Roi is a favourite among locals. They serve standard cafe fare such as focaccias and sandwiches, along with coffee which is regarded as being the best in the area.
The breakfasts are generously portioned. Expect to be confronted with a mountain of bacon and eggs served with toast, hash browns, a sausage and more spinach than you can handle heaped onto one monstrous plate. The perfect cure for a morning (or mid-afternoon) hangover.
If you don't fancy the usual breakfast fare of eggs, toast and whatnot; Le Roi also serves pancakes, from $10.50 for the most basic serve.
With an abundance of indoor seating and a few tables outside on the pavement, there's no rush to get customers fed and out the door just to clear a table. The atmosphere is leisurely. You'll wait awhile to receive your meal, but you'll spend even longer savouring it.
Le Roi is moderately priced- my 3pm breakfast including the mocha set me back less than $20. The breakfast menu mostly ranges from about $12 to $15, while sandwiches and focaccias are about $6 to $10.
