The first thing you need to know about Law Week is that it isn't.

In SA, Law Week is incorporated into Law and Justice Month, which is actually a tad short of a month. But that's the law for you, frequently illogical and often guilty of short changing you.

Never get confused into thinking that Law and Justice are the same thing.

Every year Law Week provides opportunities for the average person in the street to gain new perspectives on legal and justice issues. Some of the events are interesting and useful, while other are aimed more at law students and the legal profession.

You can find the full program here , but I will summarise some highlights for you too.

Courts Open Day
The annual open day held by the Courts Administration Authority is on May 11 at the Sir Samuel Way building. It is perhaps ironic that this place - once an upmarket department store selling household goods at modest prices, should later be upcycled to sell justice at fairly exorbitant cost.

But hey, at least it's a fabulous heritage building that hasn't been demolished for a car park . You can see a 1936 view of the Charles Moore department store here .

The open day will likely include guided tours of the building, including the basement cells and the grand courtrooms that house the District Court.

You may even get to see the regalia that our judiciary and legal practitioners wear when they dress up, but you won't get told about the judge that preferred no pants and indeed no underwear when in chambers.

There will be activities for children too, and stalls from other community organisations.

Central Community Legal Service is one of the groups that will have a stall at the Courts open day. They will have free brochures and balloons (government funding cutbacks!), but most importantly will also answer your legal questions. So if you get done by a speeding camera on your way to the open day, you may still have a chance to get out of it with free legal aid.

The Central Community Legal Service will also hold Lawyers on the Mall on May 16 between the fountain and the Mall's Balls.

Law Week Student Mock Magistrate's Hearings
This is unfortunately not about a law school student publicly bad mouthing a magistrate, because the student would be in the slammer for contempt if they tried. Anyone with a law degree could tell you that.

It's actually about a mock hearing with students doing role plays in front of magistrates. It might actually be almost as funny!

Space will probably be limited due to the number of people doing legal studies who will attend, so reserve a place if you want to see this. Held between May 13-17 at Elizabeth & Port Adelaide Courts.

Legal Education Sessions for Teachers and Youth Workers
Cyber bullying and and underage cyber sexual activities are very topical issues these days, bringing some serious issues that teenagers need to understand.

The Legal Services Commission is offering these session to relevant groups between May 15-17. See the program for contact details to arrange a session at your school or venue.

Beyond Divorce Free Seminar: Helping Children Cope with Parental Separation
Given the increasing divorce rate one might almost wonder why gay people would like the right to marry - presumably they are also seeking the right to divorce?

However couples separate, life for children must be extremely difficult and emotional afterwards.

This seminar brings in experts to help people through the "non-legal" side of separation for married and de facto couples. It will be held on May 7 from 5.30-7.30 pm, and registration is essential

There are many other events scheduled for Law Week. Please see the program or like their Facebook page for more information.
