Lauren Esposito first caught mainstream attention with her performance in the James Wan Horror film The Conjuring 2. Since then she has returned to Australia with starring roles in both The Legend of the Five and Swimming for Gold. I caught up with Lauren to talk about The Legend of the Five and here work here and abroad.

WeekendNotes: With your mum, Tanya Esposito, being the Executive Producer of The Legend of the Five, what have you learnt or come to appreciate about the Pre and Post-Production process of film-making?

Lauren Esposito: I've learnt that there is so much work being put into Pre and Post (more than you'd ever think). The production team worked day and night for months on end to make this film possible and I'll be forever grateful for everyone involved in bringing this feature come to life.

WN: Was there any added pressure or any other differences in working for your mum's production?

LE: Not really. I actually found it more fun. Usually when I'm working on a project I am away from home for months at a time and I start to really miss my family. Working alongside mum made me feel calmer while being away from home.

WN: How was it being an Australian playing an American around other Australians?

LE: It was great! But, I have to admit with all the Aussie accents around me it was sometimes easy to switch back into my normal accent, especially during high tension moments.

WN: What can you tell me about the intricacies and development process for your character, Zoe?

LE: For Zoe I really went deep with how I used to feel moving schools and states when I was in high school and how I felt on my first day. Moving schools and countries is a huge deal and can affect you emotionally and mentally. I've personally experienced both so with Zoe I used myself as motivation for her, especially at the beginning of the film.

WN: How are things going for you in Los Angeles? What is the current working climate for actors in LA?

LE: Things are mostly still on hold. Productions are starting to start up again which is awesome to see but it is and will continue to be a slow process. For me I've been lucky to have my own personal training business, so I've been working on that during the past 6 months. However, I know for a lot of actors it has been tough with no auditions and work available.

WN: With The Legend of the Five and Swimming for Gold you are creating a good profile in Australian film. Is this something you are looking to continue, or do you want to further your career in America?

LE: Absolutely! I love any excuse to come home to work. I love Australian cinema and being able to work alongside other Aussies fills me with happiness.

WN: Do you keep in contact with James Wan and has there been any discussion with you working with him in future, considering he has about 10 projects in the works at the moment?

LE: We bumped into each other last year in a shopping car park, it was really nice to catchup. The man is a genius and always has multiple projects going at one, I don't know when he sleeps! I would work with him again in a heartbeat.

WN: Is there any future work you are doing at the moment that you are excited about?

LE: Yes! I will be flying back to Australia early next year to film a feature. This one is so exciting as a key component of the film is ballet, so I've been having lessons in LA every week with my teacher and zoom lessons with our film's choreographer. I'm having so much fun with it and so excited to film next year!

The Legend of the Five is now available for purchase on multiple digital platforms (Apple TV, Fetch, Foxtel Store, Google Play, Telstra TV Movies and YouTube). While her other new film Swimming for Gold is in cinemas now.
