Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me is an award-winning and visually stunning graphic novel that was written by Mariko Tamaki, author of the New York Times bestseller This One Summer, and was illustrated by Rosemary Valero-O'Connell. It is 304 pages long, suitable for young adult readers, and was published by First Second Books on 7 May 2019.

Frederica Riley has a problem. Her girlfriend, Laura Dean, keeps breaking up and then getting back together with her. Laura Dean is the most popular girl in school. She is confident, smart and funny, but is also mean and thoughtless. Every time Laura breaks up with Freddy, it sends Freddy into an emotional spiral. All of Freddy's friends do not understand why she keeps going back to Laura. As her problems with Laura get worse, Freddy will be forced to choose between her toxic relationship, and her self-respect.

Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me was a commercial and critical success. The book received multiple awards and honours, including a Harvey Award (2019), an Ignatz Award (2019), and 3 Eisner Awards (2020). A number of publications included the book in lists which placed it among some of the Best Graphic Novels and Best LGBTQ Novels of 2019.

Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me was a beautiful book. Tamaki has written a wonderful story that perfectly encapsulates the emotions that a person cycles through when they feel trapped in an emotionally abusive relationship. I felt really bad for Freddy. She is a confused 17-year-old kid who doesn't know how to handle the relationship problems she is having with Laura. I felt like her situation was really relatable. Relationships can be confusing and break-ups can be messy and hard to process especially when you're a teenager. I really liked how Tamaki addresses these issues in the book. Freddy has to figure out what does loving Laura offer her? Does this relationship make her happy? Is she a bad friend when she is with Laura?

Rosemary Valero-O'Connell's artwork was excellent in this book. Her illustrations were predominately black and white, with splashes of pink thrown in, to evoke an emotional response. Her creative use of space, shadow and colour helped to bring the characters to life and perfectly captured the bittersweet teen romance at the heart of the book. Her artwork combined with Tamaki's story made the book an emotional roller coaster from start to finish.
