HOLA Brisbane.
Ever wondered what Latin Dance is like? I have exciting news. There is a studio in Wooloongabba where latin dance is going off. Salsa, Merengue, Kizomba, Bachata, Tango, Zouk and Samba are styles of Latin Dance that are finding a new home in Brisbane, with classes sprouting up all over the place. And theres no doubt, it's a great meeting place for a fun night. K & L dance studios have been in operation now for 2 years, although I found myself going there through a meet up group organised by the lovely May, a Spanish professional dancer (and architect).
I took a deep breath and stepped tentatively into the foray of latin dance under the guidance of May, who roped hubby Jose in when the class numbers suddenly grew above 30. What I love about their class is this: they put the F back in the word Fun. Their particular teaching style is full of laughter with a few spanish jokes thrown in. Their personalities shine with the sheer joy of dancing, infecting us all. May and Jose are down to earth folk who happen to be excellent teachers and individual experts in their chosen fields. This couple don't just talk the talk, they definitely dance the dance. This weekend they are dancing in Sydney for the Latin National Championships.
May and Jose met in their home country of Spain at no less, a salsa class. Sparks flew and eventually, after a few twists and turns, they married and moved to Australia having been granted a permanent visa of distinguished talent. They have many dance awards between them and boy, are we lucky to have them here in Brisbane. They hold regular classes at The Dance Works in Burke Street, Woolloongabba as well as private classes for any of you who may be getting married and want to show off a new skill on the dance floor. Find out more about them here:
May and Jose .
Dancing is an excellent way to keep fit, have fun and make new friends. We rotate partners and hence get to experience different styles and meet new people. There is nothing like learning to dance with 2 left feet to give you the giggles. Thankfully, laughter produces endorphins - the feel good hormones and I guarantee you will leave their class feeling totally renewed, excited and raring for more. May and Jose are caring, accommodating teachers who really inspire you to want to continue to fall in love, with latin, step by step.
May and Jose are going to start holding 2 hour classes on a saturday afternoon 5.30 - 7.30pm beginning July 11th. First class: The Tango. At K & L studios you can also find the lovely Larissa and Kadu, from Brazil, professional teachers who are more than happy to accommodate you. Their link is here
Straight from Brazil . There is so much happening in this arena, like a weekend dedicated to Casa do Zouk
An entire weekend of dance! Or a live in camp, cabin style on the gold coast in September -
Jean-Luc Lambs .
Meanwhile get your dancing shoes ready and give it a try. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes (a slight heel is good for the ladies.) You have nothing to lose, except maybe a kilo or two.
