I recently saw the movie The Last Cab to Darwin and enjoyed every minute of it. It had pathos, energy and was enthralling, even though the story was quite simple.

It is a comedy/drama, written by Reg Cribb, and directed by Trevor Dhu. The Last Cab to Darwin is now on as a live stage play, based on the true story of Broken Hill taxi driver, Max Bell. Max was, in the early 1990s, suddenly diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer.

Max decided to end his life with dignity. However in Broken Hill, as in most places in Australia, the euthanasia laws do not allow for this. The only place he could go to at that time was the Northern Territory as they were just in the throes of passing new voluntary euthanasia laws.

This law is in bitter dispute but, undeterred, Max sells up everything he owns, says goodbye to his beloved neighbour Polly, and drives the 3,000 kilometres to the top end, Darwin. The story then follows Max's journey up to the dead heart of Australia, where he encounters a host of bizarre and interesting outback characters.

His hopes of becoming the first person in history to take advantage of the "Rights Of The Terminally Ill Act" are, however, sadly crushed when the law is overturned by Federal Parliament. The story then goes on to tell about Max's desperate attempt to return to Broken Hill to be with his beloved Polly. On the way, he meets some interesting characters which makes this story even more interesting!

The Sydney Morning Herald wrote a review on this marvellous story as follows - "Reg Cribb's play is a big-hearted, sprawling, dry-humoured, unwieldy saga which splendidly evokes the landscape of knotted trees, furnace sunsets and the dual feeling of liberation and terror on the journey from Broken Hill to Darwin."
