Melbourne-based, independent filmmaker Luke Walker, like so many before him, is fascinated by the legend of
Harold Lasseter , who in 1929 proclaimed he found a rich gold reef in a remote and desolate corner of central Australia - now known as 'Lasseter's Reef'.
In 1931 Lasseter mounted an expedition to rediscover the supposed reef but perished in the desert. His body was later found - in his pockets were a few gold specimens.
Since Lasseter's death, there have been hundreds of expeditions to find the 'seven mile seam of gold' that Lasseter apparently uncovered - but the gold has never been found.
In the acclaimed new documentary 'Lasseter's Bones', Walker sets out to separate the myths from the facts and finds Lasseter's 85-year-old son, Bob, still searching the desert for not only gold, but the truth about his father.
Walker's journey became a three year adventure, across six states and deep into the heart of Australia. Walker notes "All the evidence you need to understand what truly happened to Lasseter and his gold is in this film. For all the myth and mystery, this film gets closer to the gold than anyone has been in 80 years."
'Lasseter's Bones' is a 'Best Documentary' nominee at the
Film Critics Circle of Australia Awards 2013 and was also voted one of the 'Top 5 Most Popular Documentaries' at the 2012
Melbourne International Film Festival.
