With a 12 year old son, you can imagine that we have done the rounds of the various laser-skirmish-shooting style games over the years. The pain of paintball was never for us, particularly when the kids were younger, and the kids had outgrown the more limited indoor lasertag, but the gamesmanship of outdoor laser skirmishing really hit the mark (literally).
Having schlepped around almost every venue on offer in Melbourne, we have a firm favourite - that run by the team at Laserstrike. They have 'battlefields' right across the state, and those within reach of Melbourne include The Basin, Gembrook, Geelong and Healesville. They even have a mobile unit which they will bring to you.
What stands out about the Laserstrike team is that they run a tight, firm but very friendly ship, and they have their tongue firmly in cheek. Safety is paramount, but the briefings are never overwhelming, and the mix of team games which they run in each 2 hour session ensures players are never bored. There are a variety of 'weapons' to choose from, so even small children can manage, though of course, they always seem to want the biggest, meanest and heaviest looking weapon on offer!
Parties are well catered for and on my son's 12th birthday party (which was at the Geelong venue), they went head to head with a hen party, who had hilariously perfected the 'drop and roll' technique of laser combat. The 'battlefields' are large and varied, depending on the location. The Basin for example is on heavily treed land, whereas Geelong's cover is all manmade and well stocked with suitable barriers, obstacles, old cars, hay bales and purpose built mazes. Coveralls and, importantly, warpaint/camouflage is provided for that taste of authenticity. The Laserstrike team also field regular competitions and their players have competed in national titles - so be warned, it is addictive and seriously fun. Oh, and take lots of water - you can work up a major thirst.
Laserstrike's website is user friendly and full of information about booking, pricing, events and FAQs. You can also contact them on 1300 764686 or via email: firstname.lastname@example.org
