Amidst the many cafés along the beaches of Mornington Peninsula lies Laneway Espresso.

We were about a 20 minute drive away from the venue when we decided to visit. It was late in the afternoon so we called to make sure the kitchen would still be open.

The staff member we spoke to said it would be closing around our arrival but that they would keep the kitchen open a little longer for us.

From the main strip of Point Nepean Rd, the café looks like any other with plain outdoor seats. But find their side laneway entrance and it's a completely different mood.

Art adorns the walls, cute pot plants surround the tables and the area is perfect for dogs to hide away from the breeze and sun.

We ordered the Roasted Mushroom ($18), portobello mushroom with spinach on poached eggs, and the Smashing Pumpkins ($18), roast pumpkin with Danish feta and onion jam with poached eggs.

I found both on the expensive side and I also preferred the mushroom dish, as the pumpkin was all mushed together with the other ingredients, making it the flavour a little boring.

We also indulged in an iced coffee as it was a beautiful sunny day, but not too hot. I enjoyed the decor and feel of the cafe more than anything, with lots of knick-knacks and quirks bringing it to life, and a stream of regulars making you feel just like a local.

We even witnessed the staff taking their Instagram shots for Valentine's Day and my friend's dog kept sneaking into their photos.

We'll remember this one for the venue more than the food, but also for the friendly staff member for keeping the kitchen open for us.
