After completing the
eastern silo mural last year, internationally-acclaimed artist Sam Bates (better known as Smug) returned to paint Lameroo's western silo block in April 2025.
This mural, as with the first, focuses on the rich agricultural story of the town. However, a different period of time has been portrayed - a younger woman at sunset in contrast to the older man at sunrise, technology versus manpower, innovation versus tradition, prosperity versus prospecting, etc. Although both depict resilience, determination and sacrifice, the role women play in the community has truly been celebrated in this second artwork.
Based on these installations, it isn't hard to see why Smug has earned the reputation of being a technically skilled and emotionally resonant muralist. His hyper-realistic murals are known worldwide. In Australia, his work is mainly featured along the
silo art trail of various states.
The western silo block was built in 1959 and is still operational today. It is almost 25 metres high and holds 11,900 tonnes of grain. Its length is approximately 33 metres. The larger-than-life artwork can be admired from Railway Terrace North / Mallee Highway in the heart of town. Do stop by next time you're in the region. I assure you that you won't be disappointed.
